The High Atlas rises just south of Marrakech, and on a clear day its peaks, snow-capped for much of the year, fill the horizon. Several mountain day trips leave from the city, and they are very different. This guide compares the three main options, Imlil, the Ourika Valley and Oukaimeden, to help you choose.
The short answer
- For an easy walk among Berber villages: Imlil, at the foot of Mount Toubkal.
- For rivers, cascades and the shortest drive: the Ourika Valley.
- For high-altitude views, or snow in winter: Oukaimeden.

Imlil: walking below Toubkal
Imlil is the gateway to Mount Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa. You do not need to climb it to enjoy the area: an easy walk of two to three hours with a local guide leads through walnut groves and terraced fields to a nearby village, often with mint tea in a Berber home. The drive passes through the Asni valley. The walk can be shortened or lengthened to suit your fitness.
The Ourika Valley: river and cascades
The Ourika river cuts a green valley into the High Atlas about 1h15 from Marrakech. The road passes Berber villages and riverside terraces before reaching Setti Fatma, where a short but rocky climb leads to a series of cascades. Good shoes are essential, and a local guide for the walk is recommended. Lunch on a terrace by the river is part of the experience.
Oukaimeden: the high plateau
Oukaimeden lies about 80 kilometres from Marrakech, with a ski area between roughly 2,600 and 3,200 metres. In winter, when there is enough snow, it is Morocco’s main ski station; snow is never guaranteed, and the season usually runs from December to March. The rest of the year it is a cool, open plateau for walks, with prehistoric rock engravings near the village and wide views of the surrounding peaks. It is much colder than Marrakech at any time of year.
Want more than a day?
- The 2-day Agafay Desert and Atlas Mountains tour combines a walk near Imlil with sunset and a night in a desert camp.
- The 3-day Atlas Mountains trek follows village paths and mountain passes with a local guide and a mule for your bags, staying in Berber guesthouses.
When to go and what to bring
- Spring and autumn are ideal for walking. Summer is cooler in the mountains than in Marrakech. In winter, expect snow at altitude.
- Mountain weather changes quickly: bring a warm layer outside summer.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes, essential for the Ourika cascades.
- Carry cash for lunch and small purchases.
