Merzouga or Erg Chigaga? Both are real Sahara sand seas in southern Morocco, and both give you camel rides, a night in a desert camp and a sky full of stars. The difference is in the details. Erg Chebbi, the dune field at Merzouga, has the tallest dunes and is reached by paved road. Erg Chigaga is wilder and quieter, but the last stretch is off-road by 4×4. This guide compares the two side by side, and adds Zagora for travellers who are short of time.
The short answer
- Choose Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) for the classic tall, golden dunes, an easy paved road to the edge of the sand, the widest choice of camps and the option to continue to Fes.
- Choose Erg Chigaga for remoteness and silence, if you do not mind a bumpy off-road drive and fewer camps to choose from.
- Choose Zagora if you have only two days and want a night in the desert rather than the biggest dunes.
Erg Chebbi and Merzouga at a glance
Erg Chebbi rises out of the stony plain beside the village of Merzouga, close to the Algerian border. Its dunes are the highest in Morocco, commonly described as reaching about 150 metres, and they glow orange and pink at sunrise and sunset. A paved road runs all the way to Merzouga, and camps sit among the dunes a camel ride or short 4×4 transfer away.
Because it is the best-known desert in Morocco, Erg Chebbi has the most camps, from simple tents with shared bathrooms to luxury camps with private bathrooms and proper beds. It also has more visitors, although the dune field is big enough to find quiet spots, especially at sunrise.
From Marrakech, the classic route crosses the High Atlas, visits Ait Ben Haddou and passes the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge. Three days is the minimum, as on our 3-day Merzouga desert tour, and four days is more relaxed. Erg Chebbi is also the natural choice if you want to end in Fes, as on our 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech to Fes.

Erg Chigaga at a glance
Erg Chigaga lies west of Merzouga, beyond the small town of M’Hamid where the paved road ends. From there, the dunes are about 40 km away across rocky and sandy tracks, so the last part of the journey is by 4×4. The dunes are generally lower than at Erg Chebbi but spread over a wide area, and the setting feels more remote.
There are far fewer camps here, and no village at the foot of the dunes. That is the appeal: silence, a huge horizon and the feeling of being properly out in the Sahara. The trade-off is a longer, rougher journey, less choice of accommodation and higher costs for 4×4 transport.

Which one suits you?
First-time visitors
Erg Chebbi. It gives you the Sahara most people imagine, the road is easy, and the drive includes some of Morocco’s best scenery.
Travellers who want solitude
Erg Chigaga, as long as you are comfortable with an off-road drive and accept fewer camp options. Ask exactly how long the 4×4 section takes and what the camp provides.
Families and older travellers
Usually Erg Chebbi over four days, which shortens each driving day. The paved road and the choice of comfortable camps help.
Short trips
With only two days, choose Zagora. Our 2-day Zagora desert tour includes Ait Ben Haddou, the Draa Valley and a night in a camp. If you have half a day, the stony Agafay Desert near Marrakech is an easier option, though it has no sand dunes.
