Marrakech to Fes Through the Sahara Desert Discover Morocco’s extraordinary landscapes on this private 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour via Merzouga, a one-way journey that combines historic kasbahs, spectacular mountain scenery, dramatic gorges, and an unforgettable overnight stay among the golden dunes of the Sahara.

Instead of returning to Marrakech, travel across southern Morocco and continue north to Fes, turning your transfer between the country’s two most fascinating imperial cities into a memorable adventure.

Your journey begins with a scenic drive across the High Atlas Mountains, passing traditional villages and breathtaking mountain viewpoints. Visit the historic ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its earthen architecture and rich cultural history. Continue through Ouarzazate and the landscapes of southern Morocco toward the Dades Valley, where dramatic rock formations, palm groves, and traditional kasbahs create a striking backdrop.

On the second day, discover the impressive cliffs of Todra Gorge before continuing through the southeastern landscapes toward Merzouga. Here, the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes await, offering one of Morocco’s most iconic Sahara experiences.

Enjoy a camel trek across the golden sands around sunset, when the changing light creates unforgettable views across the dunes. Arrive at your desert camp, settle into your tent, and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner. Spend the evening beneath the stars, surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the Sahara.

Wake early to admire the sunrise over the dunes before breakfast and departure toward Fes. Your route takes you through the beautiful Ziz Valley, past the landscapes around Midelt, and across the Middle Atlas Mountains. Depending on timing and road conditions, you may also stop near the cedar forests around Azrou or in the distinctive mountain town of Ifrane before reaching Fes.

This private one-way tour is ideal for travelers who want to experience the Sahara without retracing the same route to Marrakech. It combines Morocco’s major southern highlights with a practical onward journey to Fes, making it an excellent choice for a multi-city Moroccan itinerary

    Explore Ait Ben Haddou

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s most famous historic settlements. Walk through its narrow lanes and admire its traditional earthen architecture, fortified towers, and surrounding landscape. A local guide can be arranged if you would like a deeper understanding of its history.

Continue through Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses

Travel onward through Ouarzazate and the landscapes of Skoura and the Valley of Roses. Along the way, discover traditional kasbahs, rural villages, and palm groves that characterize this region of southern Morocco.

    Arrival in the Dades Valley

Continue to the Dades Valley, known for its dramatic rock formations and winding mountain roads. Depending on the day’s timing, enjoy a scenic stop before checking into your hotel or guesthouse.

Relax over dinner and prepare for the journey toward the Sahara the following day.

  2. Day 2

Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Desert Camp

    Morning: Discover Todra Gorge

After breakfast, continue toward Todra Gorge, where towering rock walls rise above a narrow valley. Enjoy a walk through the accessible sections of the gorge and take photographs of its dramatic geological formations.

    Journey through southeastern Morocco

Continue through the landscapes around Tinghir and Erfoud toward Merzouga. Along the route, observe the changing scenery as mountain valleys give way to arid plains and desert settlements.

    Afternoon: Arrive in Merzouga

Reach the Merzouga area, the gateway to the magnificent Erg Chebbi dunes. Prepare for your desert experience and transfer any luggage required for the overnight stay according to your camp’s arrangements.

    Camel trekking at sunset

Set off on a camel trek across the dunes, with the opportunity to stop and admire the sunset over the Sahara. The duration and route depend on your camp’s location, weather, and arrival time.

If you prefer not to ride a camel, ask about an alternative 4×4 transfer to the camp.

Dinner and overnight in the Sahara

Arrive at your desert camp, settle into your accommodation, and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner. Spend the evening relaxing beneath the stars and enjoying the tranquility of the dunes.

  3. Day 3

Wake up early to admire the sunrise over Erg Chebbi, weather permitting. Watch the changing light spread across the sand dunes before returning to camp or the nearby departure point for breakfast.

    Travel through the Ziz Valley

Leave the Merzouga region and travel north through the Ziz Valley, known for its palm groves, oasis settlements, and dramatic scenery. Enjoy views along the route as the landscape transitions from the Sahara’s arid surroundings toward the Middle Atlas Mountains.

Continue through Midelt and the Middle Atlas

Pass through the Midelt region and continue north. Depending on timing and road conditions, the itinerary may include a stop near the cedar forests around Azrou, where Barbary macaques sometimes appear, or a short visit to Ifrane, known for its distinctive architecture and cooler mountain setting.

These stops depend on the day’s schedule and should not be treated as guaranteed extended visits.
