Chefchaouen from Marrakech: How to Get to the Blue City

Getting to Chefchaouen from Marrakech takes most of a day. The Blue City sits in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, about 560 km from Marrakech by road, and there is no direct train or bus. You can drive it in seven to eight hours with stops, combine the train with a bus, or fly to Tangier or Tetouan and finish by road. A day trip is not realistic. This guide compares every option and shows the easiest way to fit Chefchaouen into a Moroccan itinerary.

How far is Chefchaouen from Marrakech?

By road, Chefchaouen is roughly 560 km north of Marrakech. Online route planners give a little under seven hours of pure driving, mostly on motorway via Casablanca and Rabat, then on mountain roads for the last stretch. In practice, with fuel, lunch and the slower roads into the Rif, plan on seven to eight hours.

That distance is the key fact for planning. Chefchaouen is much closer to Fes (around four hours by road) and to Tangier and Tetouan than it is to Marrakech, so most travellers reach it from the north or as part of a loop.

Is there a train from Marrakech to Chefchaouen?

No. Chefchaouen has no railway station. The usual rail route is Marrakech to Casablanca, then the high-speed line from Casablanca to Tangier, then a bus or taxi from Tangier to Chefchaouen. Route planners put the whole journey at around nine hours or more, depending on connections.

The train is comfortable and good value, but you change at least twice and carry your luggage between the station and the bus. If you are travelling light and like trains, it works. If you have children or a lot of luggage, it is a long day.

Can you take a bus from Marrakech to Chefchaouen?

There is no practical direct bus. National coach companies such as CTM run to Chefchaouen from cities in the north, so from Marrakech you change in a city such as Rabat, Fes or Tangier. Expect around ten hours or more in total. Buses are the cheapest option and they are reliable, but this is the slowest way to make the trip.

Can you fly from Marrakech to Chefchaouen?

Chefchaouen has no airport. The nearest airports are Tetouan, about an hour and a quarter away by road, and Tangier, a little further. When there is a convenient flight from Marrakech to one of them, flying plus a transfer is the fastest way to get there, at around five to six hours door to door. Schedules change by season, so check current flights before you plan around them.

Driving with a private driver

A private driver is the most comfortable option if you are more than one or two people. You leave from your riad, stop when you want, and arrive at your hotel in Chefchaouen without changing transport. The real advantage, though, is that you do not have to make the trip in one go. With a driver you can break the journey in Rabat or Fes and see something on the way.

Can you visit Chefchaouen as a day trip from Marrakech?

Not realistically. A return day trip would mean around fifteen hours on the road for two or three hours in town. Day trips to Chefchaouen do work from Fes, where the drive is around four hours each way, or from Tangier and Tetouan. If you are based only in Marrakech, spend your day trips closer to home, for example in the Atlas Mountains, the Agafay Desert or Essaouira, and keep Chefchaouen for a longer trip.

The best way: include Chefchaouen in a loop

The easiest way to see Chefchaouen is to stop pretending it is near Marrakech. Build it into a route that passes through the north anyway:

  • Marrakech, the Sahara, Fes and Chefchaouen. Cross the Atlas to the Merzouga dunes, continue to Fes, then drive to Chefchaouen and return south via Rabat and Casablanca. Our 7-day Morocco tour from Marrakech follows this route with a night in Chefchaouen.
  • Casablanca to Marrakech the long way. Start on the coast, go north to Chefchaouen and Fes, then south through the desert to Marrakech. Our 10-day private Morocco tour is built this way.
  • A northern add-on. If you land in Tangier or come by ferry from Spain, see Chefchaouen first and travel south afterwards.

Either way, you see Chefchaouen when you are already in the north, instead of spending two days of your holiday on a return drive. To decide how long to stay once you get there, read is Chefchaouen worth visiting and how many days you need.
