Most visitors to the Agafay Desert come for the sunset and return to Marrakech the same evening. Others choose to spend the night in a desert camp. Both are good choices, but they suit different trips. This guide compares the two so you can decide which one is right for you.
The short answer
- Choose the half-day trip if you have a short stay, travel with young children, or simply want the sunset without packing a bag.
- Choose a night in a camp if you want the stars, the silence and the sunrise, and you have a full day and a half to spare.

The half-day sunset trip
This is the simplest way to experience the Agafay. You are picked up at your hotel or riad in the afternoon, drive about 45 minutes, and spend the last hours of daylight in the hills. A camel ride is included on our trip, and you can add dinner at a camp or a quad ride on request.
Why choose it: it fits into a city break without losing a full day, you sleep in your own room, and it is easy with children. The trade-off: you leave soon after dark, so you only get a glimpse of the night sky.
A night in an Agafay camp
Staying overnight changes the experience. After dinner, the camp lights go down and the sky fills with stars in a way that is impossible in Marrakech. Then you wake up to the first light on the hills and breakfast in the open air.
Our 2-day Agafay Desert and Atlas Mountains tour makes the most of the day before: in the morning you walk with a local guide through walnut groves and Berber villages near Imlil, below Mount Toubkal, then cross to the Agafay for sunset, dinner and the night in a camp. You are back in Marrakech before lunch the next day.
Why choose it: stars, sunrise, and two very different landscapes (mountains and desert) in a short trip. The trade-off: you need to pack an overnight bag and give it a day and a half.
What an Agafay camp is like
Camps in the Agafay range from simple to very comfortable. Typically you can expect:
- Tents with real beds, often in Berber style; comfort varies from standard tents to more spacious ones with a private bathroom.
- Dinner and breakfast, usually Moroccan cooking served in a dining tent or outdoors.
- Evening atmosphere: lanterns, a fire on cool nights and sometimes live music.
- Optional activities such as camel rides or quad bikes, often booked for the morning.
On our 2-day tour, standard tents are included and more comfortable tents are available on request. Tell us what matters most to you and we will suggest the right camp.
Questions to ask before you book a camp
- Does the tent have its own bathroom, or are facilities shared?
- Is there heating or extra bedding for cold nights (November to March)?
- Are dinner and breakfast included, and can special diets be catered for?
- How far is the camp from the road, and how is luggage handled?
- Are activities such as camel rides or quads included or extra?
Travelling with children
Both options work for families. The half-day trip is the easier one for young children: a short drive, a camel ride, sunset and home to bed. Older children often love the adventure of a night in a tent, as long as everyone has warm clothes for the evening.
Want real dunes too?
The Agafay is a stony desert without sand dunes. If you dream of sleeping between tall orange dunes, look at our 3-day Merzouga desert tour, or read our Merzouga desert guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stay one night in the Agafay without the Atlas walk?
Yes. Every trip is private and can be adjusted. Tell us your dates and we can arrange an Agafay-only night.
Is it safe to sleep in a desert camp?
Agafay camps are established tourist camps, usually with staff on site through the night, and the area is less than an hour from Marrakech. If you have any concern, ask us about the camp before you book.
Do I need to bring anything special?
Warm clothes for the evening, a small torch, a power bank and your usual toiletries. Larger luggage can stay in Marrakech.
